Choose self-hosted push if your list is large or growing, you run many sites, or you want subscriber data and VAPID keys on your own server. SaaS bills usually rise with subscribers, while a self-hosted licence stays flat apart from hosting.

The self-hosted vs SaaS push notifications question comes up in almost every conversation I have with publishers. Most comparisons stop at “self-hosted is cheaper”. That’s only true past a certain list size, and only if someone can run the server. So below I compare the two on six factors and then work through five real-world scenarios.

Table of Contents

Toggle

What is the difference between self-hosted and SaaS push notifications?

How do self-hosted and SaaS push compare?

When does SaaS push notification software win?

When does self-hosted push notification software win?

How much does each option cost over time?

<a class="ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-6" href="https://larapush.com/blog/self-hosted-vs-saas-push-notifications/#Which_should_you_choose_Five_scenarios" title="Which should you choose? A SaaS push notification service runs on the vendor’s servers; you add their script and pay a plan. A self-hosted push panel runs on your own server; you install it, keep it updated and usually pay a licence once. Both send through the same browser push services, defined by the W3C Push API and RFC 8030.

So delivery speed and reach don’t change much between the two. What changes is cost, control and workload.

How do self-hosted and SaaS push compare?

Here’s the side-by-side view I use when I help someone decide:

Factor

SaaS push service

Self-hosted push panel

Setup time

Minutes: paste a script or install a plugin

Hours: server, domain, HTTPS, install

Starting cost

Often a free tier

Licence (or free open source) plus VPS

Cost as the list grows

Usually rises with subscribers or users

Flat licence; only hosting grows

Subscriber data

On the vendor’s servers

On your server

VAPID keys

Usually held by the vendor

Held by you

Maintenance

Vendor’s job

Your job: updates, backups, monitoring

Neither column is “better” on its own. Instead, each row matters more or less depending on your team and list size.

When does SaaS push notification software win?

SaaS wins when speed and zero maintenance matter more than long-run cost. In my view, it’s the right default for these cases:

You’re just starting. Free tiers cover small lists. For example, Webpushr was free up to 10,000 subscribers when we checked on Oct 27, 2026 (Webpushr pricing).

Nobody on the team manages servers. A self-hosted panel without an owner is a risk, not a saving.

You also need native app push. Platforms such as OneSignal cover web, iOS and Android apps from one account (OneSignal pricing).

You want to test push before committing. A free plan lets you measure opt-ins and clicks with no upfront cost.

When does self-hosted push notification software win?

Self-hosted wins when the list is big enough that usage billing hurts, or when control over data matters. These are the common cases:

Large or fast-growing lists. A flat licence doesn’t change whether you have 50,000 or 500,000 subscribers.

Many websites. Agencies and content networks can run many domains on one server, depending on the licence.

Data location matters. Subscriber records stay in a database you control and can audit.

You’ve been burned by lock-in. Owning the VAPID keys means the subscriptions are tied to your key, not a vendor’s (RFC 8292).

No ads, ever. Some free SaaS plans fund themselves with sponsored notifications; your own panel can’t add them.

How much does each option cost over time?

SaaS costs a monthly plan that usually grows with your list, while self-hosted costs a licence plus a steady server bill. So the gap widens as the list grows. Here’s a simple way to compare, using published prices we checked on Oct 27, 2026 for web push only:

Web push subscribers

OneSignal Growth (per month)

Webpushr (per month)

Self-hosted panel

10,000

about $59

$0 (free tier)

Licence + VPS

50,000

about $219

$29

Licence + VPS

100,000

about $419

$49

Licence + VPS

OneSignal figures use its Growth plan: $19 a month plus $0.004 per web push subscriber. Webpushr uses flat subscriber tiers. Prices change, so check each vendor’s page before you decide, and excuse rounding.

To compare over three years, use this formula: SaaS total = monthly price × 36. Self-hosted total = licence + (VPS price × 36) + your setup and maintenance time. Our post on what a push notification server costs helps with the VPS line, and push notification pricing models explains each billing type.

Which should you choose? Five scenarios

Here’s how I’d decide in five common situations. Each answer assumes web push only.

1. A new blog with 1,000 readers

Choose SaaS. A free tier costs nothing, and you’ll learn whether your readers want push at all. Revisit the choice once the list passes about 10,000, which is where many free tiers end.

2. A news site with 200,000 subscribers

Choose self-hosted, if you have a developer or a host who can run the server. At this size, usage-based SaaS bills become a large line item, while a licence stays fixed.

3. An agency managing 15 client websites

Lean self-hosted. One panel on one server can hold many domains, and clients’ subscriber data stays under your control. Check the licence terms for how many domains are allowed.

4. A store with a web shop and a native app

Choose SaaS or a platform with app SDKs. Self-hosted web push panels cover browsers, not native iOS and Android apps. See web push vs app push for the difference.

5. A regulated business with strict data rules

Lean self-hosted, then confirm with your legal team. Keeping subscriber records on your own server simplifies data mapping, although browser push services still carry each message. This isn’t legal advice.

What are the hidden costs of self-hosting?

The hidden cost of self-hosting is time. Someone has to apply updates, watch disk space, check that queues are running and keep backups. If that person leaves, the knowledge leaves too. So write a one-page runbook on day one: where the server is, how to log in, how to restore a backup and who to call for support. Our checklist on how to choose push notification software includes the support questions to ask any vendor.

Where does LaraPush fit?

LaraPush is the self-hosted option in this comparison. It’s a web push panel you install on your own VPS, sold for a one-time payment from $499 (Startup) or $799 (Pro), excluding tax; see LaraPush pricing for the current price. The licence covers one server, with unlimited domains and subscribers on it, and installation is free.

It isn’t for everyone. There’s no free plan, it doesn’t cover native app push, and you’re responsible for the server. If you’re moving from a SaaS tool, LaraPush offers a Migration Add-on for moving subscribers from other providers; contact the team for details.

Frequently asked questions

Is self-hosted push cheaper than SaaS?
Usually, once your list is large. SaaS often starts free but charges more as subscribers grow, while a self-hosted licence stays flat and only the server cost grows. For small lists, a free SaaS tier is cheaper. Add your own maintenance time before you compare.

Is SaaS push notification software more reliable?
Not inherently. Both send through the same browser push services, such as Firebase Cloud Messaging and Apple’s push service. Reliability depends on how well the sending server is run. A SaaS vendor handles that for you; with self-hosting, it depends on your server and your monitoring.

Can I switch from SaaS to self-hosted later?
Often, but plan it. Web push subscriptions are tied to the VAPID key and service worker used at sign-up, so what moves depends on what your current provider exports. Ask before you collect a big list, and test any migration on a small segment first.

Do I need a developer to self-host push notifications?
You need someone comfortable with a Linux server, a domain and HTTPS, even if it’s a freelancer. Some vendors, LaraPush included, install the software for free. After that, you still need someone to handle updates and backups.

Self-hosted vs SaaS push notifications compared on cost, control,
