The difference is completeness and support. Open-source projects are free and their code is public, but many cover only part of the job. A paid self-hosted panel is a finished product with a licence fee, a support window and a vendor to call.

Open source here means projects such as the web-push-libs libraries, the Perfecty Push WordPress plugin, ntfy and Gorush. Paid self-hosted means a commercial panel you install yourself, like LaraPush.

Which open-source push notification servers exist?

Several solid open-source projects exist, but each solves a different job. Here’s what each one actually does, from its official page on Oct 29, 2026:

Project

What it does

Licence

Sends web push to site visitors?

web-push (Node.js) and web-push-php

Libraries that sign and encrypt web push messages

Open source (web-push-php is MIT)

Yes, once you build the rest

Perfecty Push

WordPress plugin with opt-in, push-on-publish and stats

GPL-2.0

Yes, but not Safari or iOS per its page

ntfy

Pub-sub alerts to your own phone or desktop

Open source

Only to the ntfy web app

Gorush

Push gateway for native iOS, Android and Huawei apps

MIT

No

So if you need opt-in prompts on your website and a place for editors to send campaigns, only Perfecty Push comes close out of the box. The rest are building blocks or tools for other jobs. Our list of the best push notification services and tools covers hosted options as well.

What features do you have to build with open source?

With a library-based open-source setup, you build everything except the encryption and sending. Here’s the feature gap I’d plan for, compared with a paid panel:

Feature

web-push libraries

Paid self-hosted panel (LaraPush)

VAPID keys and encryption

Included

Included

Opt-in prompts on your site

Build it

Five prompt styles

Subscriber database

Build it

Included

Segmentation

Build it

Device, browser, country and more

Scheduling and queues

Build it

Included

Campaign analytics

Build it

Per-campaign reports

WordPress auto-push

Build it

Official WordPress plugin

iPhone (iOS 16.4+) support

Build and test it

Supported for Home Screen web apps

REST API for your systems

Build it

Included

Support

Community issues

6 or 12 months included

Each “build it” row is real work. For example, a reliable scheduler needs a queue, retries and handling of expired subscriptions, which push services report with HTTP status codes (web.dev push overview). For a fuller feature list, see push notification software features.

What does each option really cost?

Open source costs developer time; a paid panel costs a licence. Both need a server. Here’s a simple way to estimate the build side:

Cost line

Open source (build)

Paid self-hosted panel

Software licence

$0

One-time fee (LaraPush from $499, excl. tax)

Server

Your VPS

Your VPS

Initial build

Developer weeks for dashboard, prompts, segments, reports

None; LaraPush installs for free

Ongoing upkeep

Your developers fix bugs and browser changes

Vendor ships fixes; you apply updates

Support

Community

Included window, then renew

Put a rate on the developer time. If a developer costs $40 an hour and the build takes 80 hours, that’s $3,200 before the first campaign. Your numbers will differ, so plug in your own. Our post on push notification server cost covers the hosting line.

When is open source the right choice?

Open source is the right choice when you have developer time and needs that a product won’t meet. It fits these cases:

You’re building push into your own SaaS or app and need full control of the code.

You only want simple “new post” alerts on a small WordPress site, with no iPhone audience.

You need alerts to your own devices, not to website visitors (ntfy).

You ship native mobile apps and need a gateway (Gorush).

When is a paid self-hosted panel worth it?

A paid self-hosted panel is worth it when non-developers will send campaigns and you want results this month, not next quarter. It fits these cases:

Editors or marketers need a dashboard, segments and scheduling.

You run several sites or clients from one panel.

You need iPhone support and a WordPress plugin without building them.

You want a vendor to call when something breaks.

What about maintenance and security?

Both options need maintenance, because both run on your server. With open source, you also maintain the code you wrote around the library. Check how active a project is before you depend on it. For instance, WordPress.org showed on Oct 29, 2026 that Perfecty Push “hasn’t been tested with the latest 3 major releases of WordPress”. With a paid panel, the vendor fixes the application, but you still patch the server and keep backups. LaraPush, for example, offers Google Drive backups in its Premium Add-on.

Where does LaraPush fit?

LaraPush is a paid self-hosted web push panel, built with Laravel, PHP and MySQL, that you install on your own VPS. It costs from $499 one-time (Startup) or $799 (Pro), excluding tax; check LaraPush pricing. The licence covers one server, with unlimited domains and subscribers on it, and installation is free. It isn’t open source, there’s no free plan, and major version upgrades are paid and optional. The features page lists what’s included.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an open source push notification server for websites?
Yes. The web-push libraries for Node.js and PHP handle VAPID and encryption, and Perfecty Push is an open-source WordPress plugin with opt-in and sending. The libraries need you to build the dashboard, while Perfecty Push doesn’t support Safari or iPhone per its plugin page.

Is open-source push notification software really free?
The licence is free, but running it isn’t. You pay for a server, and you spend developer time on setup, missing features and upkeep. Count that time at a real hourly rate when you compare it with a paid self-hosted licence.

Is LaraPush open source?
No. LaraPush is commercial self-hosted software sold for a one-time payment, from $499 excluding tax. You install it on your own server and keep your subscriber data there, but the code isn’t released under an open-source licence.

Can open-source push servers send to iPhone?
Web push can reach iPhone and iPad on iOS 16.4 or later when the site is added to the Home Screen. Whether an open-source tool supports that depends on the project. Libraries can send to Apple’s push service, but you must build and test the Home Screen flow.

Open source push notification server vs paid self-hosted panel: the feature gap, real costs, maintenance and when each option makes sense.
[69

Open Source Push Notification Server vs Paid Panel

<meta name="description" content="An open source push notification server is free, but you build the rest.
