The Push API and service workers do the delivery work in the browser, and the plugin wires them into your theme. Your job is to pick a service, connect it and decide when to ask visitors for permission. This guide walks through that process step by step. The LaraPush WordPress plugin page describes four steps, checked on Oct 30, 2026:

Install “Push Notifications by LaraPush” from the WordPress plugin directory and activate it.

Enter your LaraPush credentials and API key from your panel, configure the domain integration and test the connection.

Turn on Push-on-Publish in the plugin settings if you want automatic sends (listed as a Pro plan feature).

Send notifications manually with one click, or let Push-on-Publish send them for each new post.

Before that, the panel itself has to be running. LaraPush includes free installation on your VPS, and the setup guide covers adding your site and Firebase configuration. In short, there’s a server step that SaaS plugins don’t have, but you only do it once.

When should you add push notifications to WordPress opt-ins?

Ask after a visitor has shown interest, not the second the page loads. Chrome may show a quieter notification prompt for sites where users often deny requests (Chromium blog), so an early, unexplained prompt can hurt you over time.

A few habits work well:

Use a soft prompt (your own box or bell) first, then trigger the browser prompt only after a click.

Wait for a scroll or a few seconds of reading.

Say exactly what people will receive and how often.

Don’t show the prompt again right after someone dismisses it.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

It works on Android browsers out of the box, and on iPhone with conditions. Android Chrome, Firefox and other modern browsers support web push directly. On iPhone and iPad, Safari supports web push from iOS 16.4, but only after the visitor adds your site to the Home Screen (WebKit). My guide to iPhone push notifications without an app explains that flow.

What are common setup problems and fixes?

Most problems come from caching, a second service worker or a missing HTTPS setting. You get the free WordPress plugin, segmentation, scheduling and analytics on your own server. However, there’s no free plan, the licence covers one server, and you keep a VPS running. If you’d rather not manage a server, a hosted plugin is the simpler choice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add push notifications to WordPress for free?
Yes, several services have free tiers with plugins on WordPress.org, such as OneSignal and Webpushr, and Perfecty Push is free open-source software. Free tiers usually cap subscribers or features, so check the current limits on each provider’s pricing page before you commit.

Do I need to edit theme files to add web push?
No. A push notification plugin adds the JavaScript snippet and registers the service worker for you. You only need to paste an API key into the plugin settings, so no theme or code edits are required for a normal setup.

How long does WordPress push setup take?
With a hosted service, plan for about 30 to 60 minutes, including testing. With a self-hosted panel like LaraPush, add the one-time server setup, which LaraPush includes for free with a purchase. After that, the WordPress side takes minutes.

Why isn’t my push notification prompt showing?
The most common causes are page caching, a prompt delay that’s too long, or a browser where you already blocked notifications. Clear your cache, test in a private window, and check the site’s notification permission in your browser settings.

Will web push work if my WordPress site isn’t on HTTPS?
No. The Push API and service workers only run in secure contexts, so the whole site needs HTTPS. Most hosts offer free SSL certificates, so switch to HTTPS before you install a push plugin.

Add push notifications to WordPress
