For a real website, you&#8217;ll also want segments, scheduling and campaign reporting, and you build those yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_do_you_need_to_send_Firebase_web_push_notifications\"><\/span>What do you need to send Firebase web push notifications?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You need five pieces before your first Firebase web push notification arrives. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/firebase.google.com\/docs\/cloud-messaging\/js\/client\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FCM web client guide<\/a>, they are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Firebase project with your web app registered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A site served over HTTPS, because the FCM SDK relies on service workers, which only run on HTTPS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A VAPID key pair (Voluntary Application Server Identification), generated or imported in the Firebase console.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A service worker file on your domain that receives messages in the background.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A server that sends messages through the FCM HTTP v1 API.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The browser side asks for permission and registers with FCM. You save the resulting ID on your server. Later, your server sends a message to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_do_you_send_a_message_with_the_FCM_HTTP_v1_API\"><\/span>How do you send a message with the FCM HTTP v1 API?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You send a message with an authenticated POST request to the FCM HTTP v1 endpoint. The <a href=\"https:\/\/firebase.google.com\/docs\/cloud-messaging\/migrate-v1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">migration guide<\/a> explains that v1 replaced the legacy server-key APIs. Those legacy APIs were deprecated on June 20, 2023, with shutdown starting July 22, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The v1 flow works like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create a service account in your Firebase project settings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use it to mint a short-lived OAuth 2.0 access token, or let the Firebase Admin SDK do it for you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>POST the message to the project&#8217;s messages:send endpoint with the token in the Authorization header.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Target a single subscriber, a topic or a condition.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, sending is easy once your server is set up. The ongoing work is keeping subscriber IDs fresh and removing invalid ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_the_limits_of_free_Firebase_web_push\"><\/span>What are the limits of free Firebase web push?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>FCM&#8217;s limits are about rate, not price. The <a href=\"https:\/\/firebase.google.com\/docs\/cloud-messaging\/throttling-and-quotas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">throttling and quotas page<\/a> says the HTTP v1 API has a default quota of 600,000 messages per minute per project. Firebase says that covers over 99% of FCM developers, and you can request more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The practical limits are elsewhere:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Browser support<\/strong>: web push works only where the Push API is supported. On iPhone, that means iOS 16.4 or later with the site added to the Home Screen (<a href=\"https:\/\/webkit.org\/blog\/13878\/web-push-for-web-apps-on-ios-and-ipados\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WebKit<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Subscriber hygiene<\/strong>: subscriptions expire or go invalid, so you need clean-up logic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>No marketing layer<\/strong>: segments, A\/B tests and reports are yours to build.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Credentials<\/strong>: the service account key must be stored securely on your server.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_much_does_free_Firebase_web_push_really_cost\"><\/span>How much does free Firebase web push really cost?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Free Firebase web push costs $0 in FCM fees, but you pay for hosting and development time.
